The Wellness Wheel Clinic aims to provide equitable access to high-quality clinical and holistic care for Indigenous and vulnerable populations

About Wellness Wheel Clinic

Wellness Wheel is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2016 by Dr. Stuart Skinner. As an infectious disease specialist, he has cultivated a passion for working directly with communities to address the high incidence of chronic diseases in Indigenous populations. He believes that effective health care for Indigenous people should not be limited to clinic visits with practitioners, but rather should include traditional and non-traditional care to support the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs of the individual, family, and community.

Dr. Skinner collaborates with strategic partners who hold the same core belief that “all persons should receive high-quality health care regardless of social status, cultural beliefs or physical location”.

A culturally responsive and community-driven healthcare model

The Wellness Wheel clinical team works in consultation and collaboration with Indigenous leaders and communities to create a shared vision of a culturally responsive and community-driven healthcare model that incorporates Indigenous culture and traditional ways into the western healthcare delivery model. This collaborative approach leads Wellness Wheel to deliver care through in-person clinical, on-reserve outreach medical care, and virtual care visits.

Equitable access to high-quality care for Indigenous and vulnerable populations

Wellness Wheel aims to provide equitable access to high-quality clinical and holistic care for Indigenous and vulnerable populations. Individuals are supported through every stage of the health care process to ensure high-quality care is provided in a timely and effective manner. Wellness Wheel is committed to providing continuity of care to those with the highest needs and the least access.

Wellness Wheel acknowledges and respects Indigenous culture and health, and is committed to honoring the Calls to Action related specifically to Health, as described in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report (2015).

Additionally, Wellness Wheel commits to ensuring that rights to health and data sovereignty are respected, as outlined in Ownership, Control, Access, Possession (OCAP).

Since its inception, Wellness Wheel has worked with Chief and Council and their communities, provincial and federal government partners, and the pharmaceutical industry supporters to grow Wellness Wheel from a few passionate physicians and nurses to an expanding team consisting of family physicians, physician specialists, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, counselors, health analysts, and office support staff.

Wellness Wheel has an extended team of epidemiologists, research scientists, pharmacist partners, and Peer Health Advocates.
